How to Replace an Entry Door

The door is often the first thing up for inspection by view home buyers. Remove the door in the jamb. Use a gun to unscrew the hinges against the jamb. Leave the hinges on the door. Place the door together with the exterior side down, across two sawhorses. Eliminate.

Place down the new door on top of the door with the exterior side. Be certain that the doors are flush with each other around the perimeter of the door. Use a pencil to trace the places of all three hinges into the door that is new from the side of the door that is old. Unscrew and remove the hinges from the door. Place the hinges on the door as though they were already installed on the door with the pen lines to align them. Complete the tracing round the hinge plates.

Cut round the tracings with a utility knife. Hold a chisel with the bevel side up at the side of the door. Push and stone the chisel back and forth through the grain within the hinge tracings to eliminate the wood all into a thickness of 18 inches in the interior of the tracings. Tap on the rear of the chisel in case you want to, to get it.

Insert the hinge plate to the cut-outs that are hinge. If they don’t fit level, or won’t fit to the tracings, continue shaving and cutting the cutouts till the hinge plates fit flush and snug to the hinge cutouts, known as mortises.

Screw the hinges to the door with the screws and the screw gun. Hold the door that is new set up on the jamb. The hinge plates back to the jambs. Use the screw gun to screw the hinges onto the jambs. Put on.
