Colors of Gerbera Daisy Flowers

Gerbera daisies (Gerbera jamesonii), also known as Transvaal, Barberton or Veldt daisies, grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 11. The perennial daisies with their long-lasting 2- to 5-inch wide flower heads are acceptable for cut flowers. Gerberas develop 12 to 18 inches tall, favor well-draining, slightly acidic soil and full sunlight or light afternoon shade. Deadhead spent flowers to keep the gerberas flowering more. They are available in the majority of floral colors except blue.

Form

Gerbera daisies arrive in various flower formations. Singles are only a single row of petals about a green eye; alternative forms might also have black, brown or dark red eyes. Doubles and duplexes have 2 rows of petals that overlap. Crested doubles have two overlapping rows of larger ray petals with one or more rows of small petals in the middle. Full crested doubles are much like crested doubles, however, the rows of smaller petals continue with the internal petals completely covering the eye.

White

“Winter Queen” is a white crested double gerbera with a black center eye. “Kilimanjaro” is similar to “Winter Queen,” but with off-white petals and a tan band of florets around the black center eye. “Igloo” and “White Grizzly” are white crested doubles with greenish-yellow eyes. “White Grizzly” includes a shaggier look, with longer center florets that stretch farther in the eye. “Mammut” is a crested double with a greenish-yellow eye that has petals the color of aged white lace.

Yellow and Orange

“Terracotta” bears double yellow cones with a peach tinge encompassing a dark eye. “Orange” offers pale orange petals surrounding a dark red eye; the flower head is slightly smaller and the daisy is hardy to USDA zone 7. “Famous” and “Meriva” display bright yellow double petals with green eyes, while “Heatwave” has exactly the same petal form, but with a brown eye. “Mateo” is a bi-colored crested double with orange cones and dark orange florets surrounding a dark brown eye.

Pink and Red

“Giant Spinner” is a full-crested double gerbera with white-tipped pink petals. It flowers from early spring to fall, growing up to 3 feet tall. The dark-red “Kalina” is a shaggy crested double with long center florets. “Opium” and “Estoria” are bright red crested doubles with green eyes. Pale pink “Fascination” displays rows of short petals to get a ruffled look. “Popov” grows pale pink and white petals, with rings of dark pink florets around the middle. “Express” is a dark pink double with a dark brown center.
