How to create a Light By a Hurricane Lantern

Hurricane lanterns, also known as oil lamps, were initially designed to burn kerosene and be windproof. They are rugged, sturdy, made of steel and have been used for general illumination purposes in addition to power outages. In modern times, batteries and flashlights have mostly replaced the need for the emergency light source powered by combustible fuel. Even so, when converted from fuel to power, the lamps can turn into a useful and ornamental accessory in any home.

Remove the glass world from the hurricane lamp. Typically, the top steel chimney is pulled up and tilted outward. This action will also tilt the glass world outward so that it can be grasped and pulled out of the lantern. Place the glass off to the other side.

Unscrew or pry the burner up inside the lamp. To unscrew, grasp the whole burner on your hand and turn it in a counterclockwise rotation. If you attempt to unscrew it but it simply turns in place, it will have to be pried out. Do that by placing a screwdriver’s flat blade beneath the lip, and using it like a lever, gently pry the lip upward. When the burner begins to come out of this lamp, grasp it in your hand and pull it the rest of the way out.

Measure the opening of this burner hole using a tape measure. Use this measurement to fasten an electrified burner replacing. These replacements arrive with a socket, a cord and a switch. They can be found at hardware stores and arts and crafts stores.

Screw in or press the electrified burner replacement to the burner hole. In many cases, the burners may have world or chimney mounts connected to the sides. These won’t interfere with the glass world positioning of this hurricane lamp. If you don’t like how they appear, nevertheless, the mounts could be pulled off using a pair of pliers and discarded.

Screw a light bulb into the socket.

Replace the original glass world after the electrical replacement is in place. The cord and the switch may travel out from beneath the burner ring and won’t slow the opening or closing of the glass world.
