How to Refinish Burn Marks in Furniture

The 50s and 60s were the heyday of tobacco use, and burn marks as reminders of a misplaced cigarette. Removing these marks is also an often-necessary part of restoring not only furniture pieces, but also modern furniture as well as cigarettes. You frequently don’t have any choice to stripping the finish so as to remove a burnt mark, however when the mark is superficial, you can remove it.

Scrape the finish from round the area with a sharp pull scraper. All the discoloration may be in the finish, if the burn is shallow. If that’s the case, after removing the discoloration, then touch-up the finish by dabbing three or two layers of lacquer with an artist’s paintbrush, after it dries with sandpaper moistened with 39, sanding every application.

Scrape the finish off to expose the burn, if it has penetrated into the timber. So that you do not produce cross-grain scratches, scrape with the grain. Scrape off as much of this discolored wood as possible, however, if possible, stop short of creating a depression that needs filling to match the surface about it.

Bleach the timber around the area of the burn with household chlorine bleach. Dab on the bleach and allow it to sit. Repeat when necessary. This treatment does not always remove the mark entirely, but it helps blend it into the surrounding timber.

Heal the burn mark and water when the burn mark is still apparent. If necessary apply the acid bleach with a sponge, wait for it to dry, then use more.

Neutralize chlorine bleach with water. Neutralize it with a solution of 1 tablespoon of baking soda per cup of water, then rinse with clear water, Should you used oxalic acid. Wait for the timber to dry, then sand it with 150-grit sandpaper.

Stain the area you sanded to match the rest of the piece of furniture. Let the stain dry, then use a couple of coats of lacquer with a spray can, feathering it because you work. Sand every coat with 400-grit sandpaper. Rub the surface down with 0000 steel wool after applying the final coat to blend the sheen of the patched area to that of the remaining portion of the surface.
